Get active

Physical activity is essential for good health and wellbeing.

In Northern Ireland at least 7 out of 10 people are not physically active enough to benefit their health. This inactivity is associated with numerous causes of disease and disability in Northern Ireland such as stroke, obesity, colo-rectal cancer, stress and lower back pain.

Why be active

Being physically active can help:

  • reduce excess weight and help maintain a healthy weight
  • maintain functional capacity and reduce the risk of health problems later in life
  • improve your self esteem, and give you a sense of achievement
  • improve your social life by meeting new people

The feel good factor

There is evidence to suggest that exercise has a positive effect on certain biochemical’s that affect our mood and how we feel, and can help to improve memory and concentration. Exercise can sometimes be as effective as medication in treating anxiety or depression.
