Surgery

Surgery is used to remove the cancer/tumour from the affected area of the body. The type of surgery will depend on the type of cancer. Patients who are going for surgery need to be assessed to ensure they are fit enough to undergo any procedure. They are also required to provide consent. Read more about consent.

Not everyone is suitable for surgery. Patients will discuss their suitability for surgery with their consultant.

Surgery for cancer takes place in four hospitals across the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust; Belfast City Hospital, the Royal Hospitals, Mater Hospital and Musgrave Park Hospital.

More information on surgery for each type of cancer is available in the cancer types section of this website.
