Eligibility for publicly funded treatment

From 1 June 2019, the Department of Health, along with the Public Health Agency and Health and Social Care Online, revised the eligibility criteria for publicly funded (HSC) fertility treatment.

In February 2024, the Health Minister announced further funding for fertility treatment. You can find the new criteria set out for IVF provision on our website.

Storage of embryos or sperm for use in treatment

Your publicly funded treatment includes the storage of embryos for two years from the date of your treatment.

If you wish to store embryos for longer, you will need to meet the storage costs – see Private fertility treatments.

If you wish to store sperm for use in further treatment, the same costs must be met.

Exceptions apply when stored for oncology or other specific medical reasons.
