What the service does

The prosthetics service assesses people who have lost a limb (or limbs) and provides engineering solutions. After completing the analysis, prosthetists design artificial limbs (prostheses) that reproduce the functions and characteristics of the missing limbs. We can also modify existing artificial limbs or individual components within them.

Our team treats patients with:

  • congenital limb loss
  • limb loss due to:
    • diabetes
    • vascular disease
    • infection
    • trauma

Prosthetists are trained in:

  • mechanics
  • bio-mechanics
  • material science
  • anatomy
  • physiology
  • pathophysiology

Prosthetists also work closely with physiotherapists and occupational therapists as part of amputee rehabilitation teams.

How to access the service

You must be referred to the prosthetics service by a GP or surgical consultant.

Location of service

The Amputee Rehabilitation Centre is at Musgrave Park Hospital.
