Thoracic Services

The thoracic area is anywhere between the base of the neck and the diaphragm, so this service provides assessment, diagnosis and treatment of benign or malignant diseases of the lung, pleura (lining of the lungs) and chest wall. The service provides surgery to treat the following conditions:

  • Cancers/tumours
  • Chest disease
  • Surgical correction of chest deformities

The thoracic team is made up of thoracic surgeons, anaesthetists, nursing staff, imaging staff, allied health professionals and administration staff.

How to access this service

The Thoracic service is a regional services and is available to people from across Northern Ireland.

There are two ways of accessing thoracic services:

  • As an emergency
  • Referred via a GP or another clinician.

Patients are referred to thoracic services when there are suspected or potential thoracic problems for assessment, diagnosis and treatment.
