Acute Innovation of the Year
This category reflects an innovative piece of work that a service have undertaken in an acute setting.
NEWtrition – Creation of a new Parental Nutrition system for sick new-born infants
Directorate: Trauma, Orthopaedics, Rehab, Imaging, Medical Physics and Outpatients
A multidisciplinary team created a range of pre-formulated parental nutrition solutions results in NICE compliant, optimised neonatal nutrition with significant cost and time savings.
Reducing the environmental impact of inhalers in a paediatric ward
Directorate: Child Health, NISTAR, Maternity, Dental, Gynae and Sexual Health
Reducing the number of inhalers thrown away that contain active medication and recycling plastic components. Encouraging witches to lower CO2 footprint inhalers.
Belfast Complex Aortic Service
Directorate: Anaesthetics, Critical Care, Theatres, Sterile Services and Surgery
A collaborative multidisciplinary approach to the management of patients with complex aortic disease.

Community Innovation of the Year
This category reflects an innovative piece of work that services have undertaken in the community.
Belfast Wide Early Years Partnership Programme
Directorate: Adult Community, Older People’s Services and Allied Health Professionals
Working in partnership: AHPs, Education and voluntary sector developing a specialist programme to support preschool autistic children with significant additional needs in their local communities.
‘Home is where the Health is’…… implementing pharmacist medicines optimisation in older people at home to reduce ED attendance and hospitalisation
Directorate: Cancer and Specialist Services
Two new pathways were developed and evaluated to review the impact of a pharmacist role on medicines optimisation for older people in their own home, at risk of falls (community falls pharmacist) or struggling to take their medicines as prescribed (medicines adherence pharmacist).
Northern Ireland New Entrants Service
Directorate: Children’s Community Services
Development of Family Help Service, one stop multidisciplinary clinic.

Enhancing Care through Technology
This category reflects services that have used technology to improve service user care.
The use of virtual reality to enhance a new collaborative ENT and Anaesthetic airway teaching course
Directorate: Anaesthetics, Critical Care, Theatres, Sterile Services and Surgery
The use of virtual reality simulation was used within a novel collaborative ENT & anaesthetic trainee teaching day, aimed at improving emergency airway skills.
NI Cancer Centre SABR team: Pushing boundaries of cancer treatment through multi-disciplinary innovation
Directorate: Cancer and Specialist Services
The SABR team use ultra-high dose radiotherapy to treat areas of cancer spread allowing patients to avoid long courses of chemotherapy and help quality of life as well as being economically beneficial for the Trust.

Directorate: Adult Community, Older People’s Services and Allied Health Professionals
Technology used to enhance and enable a service users life who is Deaf Blind, supported by the Sensory Support Team.

Developing a new Inflammatory Back Pain Pathway – engaging widely to improve patient care

Collaborating on axial spondyloarthritis at local, regional and national levels to increase awareness while creating a Belfast Trust referral pathway to reduce time to diagnosis.
Take a Stand – Tackling Domestic Abuse in Intimate Teenage Relationships
Directorate: Social Work
The Take A Stand Project is an evidence based initiative aimed at addressing domestic abuse in teenage relationships.
Children’s Symptom Checker
Directorate: Child Health, NISTAR, Maternity, Dental, Gynae and Sexual Health
We developed a trustworthy, reliable and easy to use online resource to empower parents to make informed decisions about their child’s health when sick.

Adult Safeguarding referral App and monthly activity reporting

The developments of an Adult Safeguarding referral app, leading to a monthly activity report, has strengthened service area oversight, and improved patient safety.
Using data to understand our service user population, inform practice and training needs within CAMHS
Directorate: Mental Health, Intellectual Disability and Psychological Services
We have developed a standard process for collection, collation and analysis of Routine Outcome Measures to evidence service effectiveness across CAMHS.
MPH Pharmacy – Preventing medication related delays for Orthopaedic surgery inpatients
Directorate: Cancer and Specialist Services
Implementing changes to how medicines are managed for elective surgery inpatients can improve patient flow and increase patient safety.

Team Haem Goes Green (THGG) was a pilot project undertaken in collaboration with patients of the Northern Ireland Haemophilia Service and The Conservation Volunteers (TCV).
Improving Joy in Work in Beechcroft
Directorate: Mental Health, Intellectual Disability and Psychological Services
A project to improve Joy in Work and staff wellbeing in Beechcroft using novel staff ideas such as complementary therapies and a staff and patient choir.
Hello Carers Activity Programme – Reaching into the Heart of the Community

The Carer Support Service implemented an innovative mental health and well-being programme in Belfast embracing a Peer Support Model – ‘The Hello Carers Activity Programme.’

The NISTAR & RICU team led by Dr Davison worked together to give a positive experience to a patient in Intensive Care for over 600 days.

This entry is to acknowledge the work of the SWAN Team in the RJMS, and the impact on vulnerable women in the perinatal period.

A multidisciplinary team implemented the encompass programme which introduced a single, digital healthcare record across Belfast Trust on Thursday 6 June. This has transformed the way care is recorded ensuring an effective, safe and world class experience for our patients, service users and staff.
