Anaesthetics
The anaesthetics service is responsible for:
- pain relief of patients in operating theatres
- general care of patients before, during and after operations
You can experience acute pain after an operation. This acute pain will be managed by anaesthetists and specialist pain nurses.
Some people also suffer from chronic pain, such as back pain or musculoskeletal disorders. These patients may be referred to a pain clinic where they can be treated. We have pain clinics in:
- Musgrave Park Hospital
- Belfast City Hospital
- Mater Hospital
-
Theatres
We have operating theatres that provide elective and 24 hour emergency services.
Inpatients may be admitted to hospital for a planned operation either the day before surgery or the day of surgery itself. Patients may also have their surgery carried out as a day case.

Sterile services
Our sterile services departments support the operating theatres by looking after surgical instruments.
