What the service does
The trauma and orthopaedics service provides a range of local and regional services that look after patients with injuries and conditions that affect the:
- bones
- joints
- ligaments
- tendons
- muscles
- nerves
Each year, we carry out approximately 3,400 emergency procedures and 8,000 elective procedures across the following locations:
- Regional Trauma Centre
- Regional Centre for Orthopaedic Surgery
- Children’s Hospital
We also provide approximately 38,000 orthopaedic and 35,000 trauma outpatient appointments each year.
Regional Trauma Centre
The Regional Trauma Centre is located at the Royal Victoria Hospital. It provides:
- a fracture service for the people of Belfast
- a regional service for more complex fractures
All spinal fractures are treated in the Regional Trauma Centre.
Regional Centre for Orthopaedic Surgery
The orthopaedic service is located at Musgrave Park Hospital. It provides a full range of elective orthopaedic procedures, including:
- joint replacement
- spine surgery
- upper and lower limb surgery
