Regional Psychosexual Service
Many of us experience sexual difficulties at some time or other in our lives. Even in a loving relationship sexual problems can occur which may be primarily due to a psychological difficulty. To begin with we need to find out what could be causing your sexual problems. We do this by talking and listening to you individually or as a couple. We appreciate this part of your life may be hard to talk about, but your therapist will be patient and support you throughout. There are no physical examinations or tests performed at the clinic.
For Whom is Psychosexual Therapy helpful?
Psychosexual Therapy can help adults of all ages and sexual orientations. We assess clients where the emotional difficulty can be combined with an underlying physical or mental health problem. In these circumstances it is best that these issues are stabilised by your GP or other specialists before you attend the clinic as this will assist in making progress with your treatment here. Facilities and access are available for people in wheelchairs and for those with limited mobility. We are happy to receive referrals for people with any disability.
What happens in Psychosexual Therapy?
We will work with you to complete a thorough assessment which will include some sensitive questions about your intimate sexual life. Our approach is of an holistic nature and we are interested in other areas of your life beyond the sexual problem. We will then discuss with you if a psychological approach might be helpful at this time. At present we have a very successful partnership arrangement with RELATE (a community based organisation with specialist expertise in sexual and relationship work) with many people being offered treatment through them in the first instance, but with an option to be treated within the clinic should you prefer. RELATE offers the option of treatment at different locations throughout Northern Ireland
