What the service does

The School Nursing Service is a skill mix team and can offer support, information and advice to children, young people, parents and teachers in either the school or home environment in respect of a range of health matters including:

    • Management of medical conditions such as; epilepsy, diabetes and anaphylaxis.
    • How to support children with special educational needs within the school environment.
    • How to keep children /young people safe; accident prevention, cyber and on-line safety and awareness.
    • Safeguarding children and young people; including ‘Looked After Children’.
    • Supporting the health needs of new entrants, refugee and asylum seeking families.
    • Support the delivery of the school based Immunisation programmes.
    • Supporting Children and Young adults to achieve continence.
    • Supporting and promoting positive mental health and behaviours.
    • Health promotion; smoking, vaping, drugs, alcohol, sexual health, healthy eating and personal hygiene.
    • Signposting and onward referral to support services.

School Nurses work in all Primary and Post Primary Schools in Belfast to:

  • Promote healthy lifestyles in schools by giving support and advice to children, parents, and school staff on health issues, immunisation programs and Child Health Surveillance.
  • Provide health promotion programmes and support for children and young people.
  • Provide health appraisals for all primary one children. Parents are invited to attend and discuss any issues or concerns they may have about their child’s health and wellbeing.
  • Provide health appraisals for all Year 8 children.
  • Provide and promote vaccination sessions to children, including HPV and TB screening.
  • Aim to offer in accordance with Government strategy the collection and recording of BMI measurements.
  • Work in collaboration with other disciplines to safeguard and protect children and young people.

Who provides the service

School nurses are registered nurses with additional training and are experienced in children’s health and have a key role in the delivery of ‘Healthy Child, Healthy Future – Child Health Promotion Programme for Northern Ireland (2010)

School nurses promote the physical, emotional and mental wellbeing of all ‘school aged’ children and young people during their time at school. They aim to identify health and developmental needs early and make appropriate health referrals to address those needs.

The service is provided in all schools throughout Belfast and Castlereagh.
