Helping young carers

Young carers are children and young people aged 18 and under who care for or support a family member who is ill or has a disability.

In some cases, there may be a family member who is dealing with an alcohol or drug problem. A young carer may help with shopping, laundry or simply help someone get about.

Young carers sometimes miss out on opportunities that other young people have because they feel responsible for someone else and don’t want to leave them alone. Young carers may also find it difficult to concentrate in school or find time to spend with friends.

Action for Children provides tailored support to children and young people aged 8-18 years who have caring responsibilities.  This includes 1:1 support, fun group activities and personal development groups.
