11th January 2024
Congratulations to Monica Johnston who was awarded a BEM in the New Years Honours for services to Nursing and the Community in Northern Ireland.
Monica dedicated 46 years to a career in nursing and worked for over 30 years at the heart of the Regional Specialist Neurology Unit at the Royal Victoria Hospital. Sadly, Monica had to medically retire in 2023, but receiving this honour reflects the dedication, compassion and professionalism shown by Monica throughout her service.
When asked about being recognised in the 2024 New Year Honours Monica said, “When I got the letter I thought it was a scam!”
Once the shock had worn off, Monica reflected, “I feel very honoured, emotional and yet humbled to receive such an honour. I loved nursing and helping people get better, or receive the right support where they couldn’t
“I always wanted to be a nurse, I still have a photograph when I was 5 years old practising nursing and I didn’t consider any other options! I commenced my career in March 1977 as a young 18 year old. I never wanted my career to end and never expected to receive anything more then a thank you. I am extremely appreciative to all those who work in our health service, and feel this honour, whilst in my name, would never have been achieved without the fantastic support of the doctors, nurses, auxiliary and support staff I have worked with throughout my career. They are the ones who deserve recognition.
“That’s why for me, receiving this honour is a recognition for all of our hard work, not any one individuals. Without teamwork, none of this would be possible. I am honoured to accept this BEM, and would encourage those healthcare staff just beginning their careers to realise the impact their work can have on their community, and always strive to deliver above and beyond service to your patients and their families. I’d also like to congratulate all other successful recipients in the 2024 New Year Honours. Thank you and Happy New Year to you all.”
Thank you Monica for your many years of dedicated service to our patients and congratulations on your well deserved recognition.
