Two areas on the Royal Victoria Hospital site have been renovated for staff use following a staff feedback survey.
The new staff hubs provide spaces for staff to spend time together before and after work and during break times. The areas also cater for those who run or cycle to work, as new showers have been fitted as well as a bicycle parking area.
In a recent Staff Experience Survey, staff expressed disappointment at the lack of ‘break-out rooms’ and spaces to relax and enjoy with colleagues during downtime and breaks. We listened to these concerns and used the refurbishment of the spaces at the Royal as an opportunity to make improvements.
Brona Shaw, Deputy Director of Nursing and User Experience said:
“During Covid we had ‘pop-up’ shower facilities in the car parks. Unfortunately, it was the only option we had at the time. They were very costly, but most disappointingly, they were uncomfortable, utilitarian and definitely not suitable as long-term solutions for our staff, who gave and still give strenuous round-the-clock effort to patients, service users and colleagues. They wanted change, we listened – and we have now done our best to make improvements for them. We were very grateful to receive money from the Department of Health which was made available to support staff in all Trusts. This helped with the refurbishment.
“It is hoped in the future that these areas could be used for health and well-being classes with some yoga classes currently taking place at Elliot Dynes. It is an area that we want to encourage all staff to use and enjoy.”
The two areas that have been refurbished are at Elliot Dynes, and medical illustration, the area that can be accessed by stairs from the Victorian Corridor at the Royal. In both areas there are storage cupboards, changing areas, a kitchen and shower facilities.
