Slips, trips, and falls are more likely during cold weather

9th January 2025

With weather warnings in place and icy conditions outside, the Belfast Trust is reminding everyone to take extra care during the cold weather. Slips, trips, and falls are more likely in icy and snowy conditions, so it’s important to stay mindful of your surroundings before venturing outdoors.

There are simple steps that can help reduce the risk of falling, such as keeping your hands free to help stabilise yourself, wearing sturdy shoes with good grip, and avoiding going out during the early morning when frost is at its heaviest or late at night when it’s dark.

Máire Kerr, Community Falls Team Coordinator said:

“Falls can happen to anyone, but icy and snowy weather increases the risk significantly. Older people are particularly vulnerable to falls, which can have a greater impact on their physical health, emotional wellbeing, and confidence.

“As temperatures drop, pavements and streets become slippery with ice and snow, so we urge everyone, especially older people, to take extra precautions.

“If you do need to go outside, ensure you wear footwear with a good grip and consider walking aids if needed. Keep warm by layering clothing both indoors and outdoors, as cold temperatures can affect mobility by making you tense up.

“It’s also important to keep your hands free and wear gloves to maintain balance. Try to plan ahead so you have enough time to get to appointments or complete errands without rushing. And if possible, let someone know your plans and have access to a mobile phone in case of an emergency.”
