10th February 2025

This week we are marking Sexual Health Week in Northern Ireland. This year’s theme is Open Conversations which encourages us all to have open discussions to eliminate stigma, empower informed choices and promote healthy relationships.
The Sexual and Reproductive Health Service are taking the opportunity to remind everyone of the free, confidential, non-judgmental and inclusive service it provides including the provision of specialist contraceptive and abortion care to people in Belfast.
Self-referral
Individuals can self-refer to the service by calling the clinic line at 028 9504 5500 during telemedicine clinic hours, Monday to Thursday from 9 am to 11:30 am and 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm. After providing medical history and sexual health information during a telephone consultation, a face-to-face appointment may be arranged at community clinics located in College Street or Health and Wellbeing Centres in Beech Hall, Holywood Arches or Carlisle.
Treatment
The service’s team of doctors, nurses, and midwives can assist in choosing the most suitable contraceptive method and dispelling common myths. Long-acting reversible contraceptive methods, such as coils, implants and injectables are among the most effective options with currently short waiting times. Hormonal contraception is safe to use and can help with conditions like heavy periods.
The Rose Clinic offers early medical abortion and surgical abortion under local anaesthetic up to 11 weeks and six days of pregnancy. Referrals for this service are made through the British Pregnancy Advisory Service which can be contacted via phone or online referral form.
Other services
Additional services include psychosexual counselling and cervical smear tests. Free online STI screening is available through SH:24 and STI treatment and advice can be accessed at the GUM clinic.
