Foot and Leg Exercises for Children

Why do it?

For your legs and feet to work well and reduce the chance of pain, they need to be both flexible and strong.

  • To make your muscles strong, we need to make them work!
  • To make them flexible we need to make them stretch!

These exercises stretch and strengthen all the main muscles that move our lower limbs.

Rules

  1. Ensure your child’s feet or body are positioned correctly
  2. Do according to advice from your podiatrist
  3. Stetches should be held for 20-30 seconds on each side and repeated once. One set per day is enough
  4. Do these exercises in bare feet unless told otherwise by a professional
  5. Find a time of day that works best for your child and family – put music or a movie on, make it a game or even a family challenge
  6. Most importantly, they should be fun!

Lower Limb Exercises

Proprioception: The communication between our brain and the rest of our body – important for balance and co-ordination

Stretching: Making a muscle or tendon longer (these should feel stretchy and sometimes a little uncomfortable but not sore)

Strengthening: Making a muscle or tendon stronger

Below are some exercises to help improve proprioception, stretch and strengthen your child’s feet, ankles and legs.
