Belfast Trust, in partnership with Belfast City Council, Public Health Agency, Open College Network and Northern Regional College are offering an Open College Network NI Award in Awareness of Loneliness for free to staff and volunteers who directly engage with older people.
The training is a two and a half day course accredited by the Open College Network (OCN). This unit will enable the learner to understand loneliness and isolation, its impact on individuals and strategies to address these.

Thursday 07 December, 9.30am – 5pm
Friday 08 December, 09.30am – 1.30pm
In person at :
Wednesday 13 December, 9.30am – 5pm
Thursday 14 December, 9.30am – 5pm
Friday 15 December, 09.30am – 1.30pm
To apply for the course you must be a staff member or volunteer working directly with older people in the Belfast Trust area. This can be in health and non-healthcare related roles.
The course will cover four learning outcomes:
- Understand what is meant by loneliness and isolation
- Understand the causes and impact of loneliness and isolation
- Be aware of the support available to prevent and address loneliness
- Know how to develop a plan to prevent and address loneliness
To achieve the Level 2 Award in Awareness of Loneliness, learners must successfully demonstrate their achievement of learning outcomes and assessment criteria for the unit.
Evidence will be gathered through completing short assessments, which will be compiled into a portfolio. This qualification is internally assessed, there are no examinations.
Please note, you need to attend all 2.5 days for each course.
